Despite some extreme battles, quick fixes and overcoming near-death experiences, all other teams scratched to to personal injury, failed machinery, and in the case of Team 28, loss of sled to the Bering Sea. For both good and bad reasons, the 2010 Iron Dog was certainly one that will go down in history. Minimal snow and new race rules played a drastic role in Iron Dog failures and triumphs this year, and fan comments were buzzing with debate. In the end, fans remained true to the sport, excited to the very end and following every bit of race news they could find. Racers too, those that surpassed the difficulties, drove hard as ever from layover to layover in a series of sprint races from Big Lake all the way to Fairbanks.

Congratulations to all the finishers of the toughest snowmobile race in the world, and better luck next year for those who fell prey to misfortune. We commend you all for playing hard and fast during the most difficult race year the Iron Dog has ever seen.

Rough Start for Nome to Fairbanks Leaders

A series of accidents and “breaks” has got Iron Dog fans in a frenzy on the airwaves. Team 3’s Shane Barber reportedly crashed, then t-boned his teammate and broke his leg between the knee and ankle. His teammate, Aaron Loyer, rode back to Nome to request assistance from med evac and returned to Barber with a sled and sleeping back to stay warm. Last reported, a Blackhawk was on route to pick up Barber and rush him to Nome.

Minnick and Olstad, Team 16, returned to Nome also with a blown engine and are in the process of making repairs, having cracked open the cylinder heads to see the damage inside. Their machine was taken with a forklift to a shop for repairs. They are allowed a couple of assistants while making repairs on the clock.

Team 10, Huntington and Olds, are now in the lead; however, they reported a broken sway bar prior to Koyuk. This is not crucial, and the team will likely continue on until their layover in Unalakleet where they can make the repair without losing time.

More news as it arrives.
